Why Seasonal Allergies Can Cause Tooth Pain (And When It’s Not Just Sinus Pressure)

The roots of your upper teeth are very near your sinuses, so when the nose is congested, it can press on the nerves or roots associated with specific teeth. Likewise, a toothache can sometimes feel like pain in the nose.

One way to recognize sinus pain and pressure separate from tooth pain is to clear the sinuses with saline or a rinse. If the tooth pain remains unchanged, you may have a tooth issue in conjunction with or instead of a sinus issue. You can also look for signs of swelling or tooth discoloration.

Causes of Tooth Pain Not Related to Sinus Pressure or Infection

You can develop a toothache for various reasons, including:

  • Tooth root infection
  • Advanced tooth decay
  • Exposed tooth roots
  • Exposed dentin
  • Grinding (bruxism)

Your dentist in Aurora, CO, will evaluate your teeth and gums to diagnose and treat the source of your tooth pain.

For tooth root infections, we provide root canal therapy. For this treatment, the dentist removes the infected pulp from the center of your tooth, cleans the root canals, and temporarily seals the tooth. At a later appointment, we cap the tooth with a dental crown or filling to restore stability.

For tooth decay, we treat the tooth and fill it with a tooth-colored restoration.

For gum exposure, the dentist may treat with dental bonding or crowning.

Prevention Is the Best Course

Prevention is about more than brushing and flossing. It is also about more than your smile's health. To keep your teeth pain-free this season, consider the following:

  • Regular dental checkups and teeth cleanings every six months
  • Regular brushing and flossing every six months
  • Flu shot if medically able
